Hosting costs: what to compare before ordering

A monthly headline price does not always tell you what is due today or at renewal. A useful comparison covers the same period, applicable taxes and the services your project actually needs.

Separate the monthly rate from the bill

Some offers show a monthly equivalent for a subscription paid in advance for a year or longer. Others allow actual monthly payments. Check the commitment, the amount due now and the next billing date. Note that difference when comparing a long commitment with a monthly service.

For a period with a constant rate, multiply the monthly price by the number of months billed and add mandatory costs. If an offer has different stages or discounts, calculate each separately. Review the checkout total before confirming, including any options already selected.

Check VAT and the payment currency

Two euro prices are not directly comparable if one includes VAT and the other does not. Check the tax treatment applicable to the buyer and the final order amount. Company details, country and customer type may affect invoicing; the headline price alone does not establish the total.

If payment is collected in Romanian lei, read the conversion rule provided by the supplier. A reference rate, conversion date and any added margin may change the amount. Use the same currency and date for comparisons, and keep service charges and taxes separate in your budget.

Calculate what follows the promotion

Check whether a discount applies only to the first invoice, the first billing period or also to renewals. Record the later rate and how to stop renewal. An automatic payment, an invoice issued for renewal and the renewal itself are not necessarily the same event.

A domain included for the first year may have a separate renewal charge. Confirm eligible extensions, the domain holder and package conditions. If you cancel hosting, check what happens to the domain and any included benefits. Do not assume every charge can be refunded.

Compare the same setup and the same work

Besides storage and resources, charges may apply for licences, a control panel, IP addresses, backups, restoration, migration or management. For VPS, check whether the price covers only the virtual machine or also system maintenance. Comparing a managed service with one you manage yourself requires more than a RAM comparison.

Account for your own time too. If updates, monitoring or recovery are your responsibility, include that work in the decision. Ask about limits and overage charges. Terms such as unlimited or unmetered need to be read alongside the usage policy.

Item Question to ask
Subscription What is due now and at renewal?
Domain and licences What is included, and for how long?
Backups and migration Which tasks and limits does the price cover?
Management Who performs updates and handles errors?

A trial is different from a refund

An unpaid trial allows use of an eligible service before payment, subject to its terms. Check whether a card is required, when the period starts, what resources are included and what happens when it ends. No upfront payment does not by itself rule out automatic renewal.

A money-back guarantee generally involves an initial payment followed by a refund request, with deadlines and exclusions. Read the policy for your plan, including domains, licences and setup charges. Keep the offer and order terms so you can check exactly what you selected later.
