Practical guide
Web hosting, WordPress or VPS: how to choose
Start with the application you use and who will maintain it. More control brings more responsibility. Price or processor count alone cannot tell you which service fits your project.
Write down the project requirements first
List what you want to run: a business website, a shop, several sites or your own application. Include the platform, required versions, current storage use and the person responsible for maintenance. A new project and an established shop can have different needs even when they use the same software.
Do not turn visitor numbers directly into a server specification. Resource use also depends on plugins, caching, images, databases and simultaneous activity. For an existing site, measured usage and observed errors are more useful than a generic traffic estimate.
Web hosting: everyday tasks through a control panel
Web hosting fits applications that work in the provided environment without requiring control of the entire server. A panel such as cPanel lets you manage files, databases and email accounts. WordPress can run on a compatible web hosting plan, not just a plan with WordPress in its name.
Check website limits, available PHP and database versions, resource limits and backups. SSH access does not automatically mean root access or permission to install any service. Confirm unusual requirements before moving an application.
WordPress: compare the services around the application
Compare a WordPress plan by the work it includes: installation, updates, backups and support. The plan name alone does not mean the provider fixes every plugin or tests each update. Ask for a clear boundary between infrastructure support and website maintenance.
For a WooCommerce shop, discuss orders, caching, extensions and data recovery separately. Restoring an older backup over the live database can lose recent orders. Agree how changes will be tested and how recovery will work before an incident occurs.
VPS: control for your own configuration
A VPS provides a configurable virtual environment. It can suit applications that need their own services, a specific operating system setup or root access. Compare CPU, RAM, storage, traffic, IP addresses and available operating systems. Extra disk space cannot make up for insufficient application memory.
Root access comes with responsibilities: system updates, firewall rules, secure access, monitoring and backups. A virtual machine control panel does not automatically maintain your applications. If you lack the time or experience, check exactly which management services are included and which cost extra.
| Option | Starting point | What to clarify |
|---|---|---|
| Web hosting | An application supported by the environment | Limits, control panel, backups |
| WordPress | A WordPress site and services around it | Updates, support, recovery |
| VPS | Your own configuration and services | System and application management |
Choose a solution you can assess and grow
Compare responsibilities and total cost over the same period, including licences, backups and management. Ask how upgrades work, whether they require migration and how data is handled. Avoid paying for extra resources without a measurable reason.
If a trial is available for your chosen plan, check eligibility and terms before activation. Test with a representative copy of the project without exposing sensitive data. A sound choice should let you explain why it fits today and what would make you review it later.
